A Sanitary Survey of Wells in Shindong Area, Kangwon Province

Abstract
A sanitary survey was carried out on 91 wells in Sindong Area, Chunseong-gun, Kangwon Provice from 11 to 17 September, 1972.
As the general characteristic, type of well, population size per well, and construction year were checked and also sanitary emvironments of wells were surveyed.
Other tested items with water samples were pH, hardness, Choride ion, Coliform group at the laboratory, and the results were summerized as follows;
1. Number of open wells used by less than 10 people were 5 out of 18, whereas that of pumped wells were 48 out of 73, and three open wells were used by more than 100 people.
None of open wells werre costructed last two years while 12 pumped wells were constructed, and 6 wells and one pump were more than 18 years old.
2. Four out of 18 wells werre within less than 3m from contamination sources such as toilet, cattle barn, while 13 out of 73 pumps were, and 81 out of 91 wells and pumps were within less than 11m from contamination sources.
Eleven wells and 35 pumps had no drainages, and only two wells and 6 pumps had drainages of more than 10m length.
3. pH values of 84 out of 91 wells and pumps were under 7.0, Hardness of 82 were less than 100 ppm and chloride ion of 68 were less than 11 ppm.
4. Coliform groups were negative in 100 ml water of 3 wells and 11 pumps and more than 100 coliform were detected in water of 14 wells and pumps.
5. Coliform groups were positive in 100 ml water of 17 wells and pumps which were within 3m from contamination sources while those were negative of two out of four wells of which distances from contamination sources were more than 15m.
6. Coliform negative was only one out of 52 wells and pumps of which the length of drainages were less than 2m while eight out of 10 of which the lenghts were more than 8m.
